The Register has an insightful piece on how (in)effectual that compulsary ID cards would be in fighting terrorism/illegal immigration. As the piece points out, very little research has been done in this field, and as much as anything else, I'd like to see some proof of its worth before the government spends an inordinate amount of money on the backend systems behind the ID card scheme.
