Thoughts on privacy in the UK

Anyone who reads this blog knows that I'm worried about the implications of the introduction of ID cards in the UK. I've thought about this long and hard to try and come up with justifications for these fears. I don't know if I have or not, but my conclusions can be found in this essay on my website. Hmm.

My instinct is not to bother about it. To me, it's just removing about five layers of bureaucracy in favour of just one, and personally I'm all for reducing bureaucracy. The idea of only having to tell the government once that I've changed name / address or so on is kind of appealing.

I'm not particularly afraid of terrorists, although I can see a few ways that ID cards could cut down on terrorist activities. I do think it's important to have ID that's hard to forge, widely available and generally accepted (preferably one that fits in the wallet) if we're going to continue with under-16 age restrictions.

It's not the card that's the problem, though, it's the database. And I can't even work up the energy to bother about that.

I've already had a discussion with Weeble about it, and he seems to feel much the way you do. But personally, I can't bring myself to care.
