I've long considered traffic lights to be rather wonderful. They represent, in their own little way, a microcosm of the rule of law to me. People (for the most part) respect the rules, even when it inconveniences them because they perceive the value to the greater good of the many. And there's that wonderful feeling of pressing a button and seeing three rows of traffic come to a halt in favour of you :-). This is lawmaking at its best – light-handed and done with the consent, and backing, of the people.
