My role in the department has primarily been involved with building and maintaining a managed learning environment (MLE) for students at the University. This system was originally designed as a simple web-based interface to our existing IT courses but has since developed into a much broader, more generic system providing web-based methods to allow tutors to monitor and communicate with their students . I also take an active role in advising the Unit on current and future directions for IT. Over the past year I have built and maintain a web-based questionnaire management and analysis system which is currently in use by several departments in the University other than my own. My most recent project has involved building an end-to-end course selection and application system. This has since evolved into a full information management system, allowing staff to perform administrative tasks relating to students, tutors and courses through this system. I have been involved in a conceptual redevelopment of both the departmental website and that of the CITSCAPES research project for which I have also built a searchable web-based resource database. I have also been involved with web maintenance for the Scotia Consortium, of which the IT Education Unit is a member. January 1998 - Ongoing I have written and currently maintain the web site for Strabane Grammar School. This acts as an online prospectus with interactivity provided by a former pupil database. This is currently available at: http://strabanegs.co.uk November 1997 - Ongoing I have written and maintain my own web site at: http://lordofthemoon.com Having spent several years working on this website, I consider it to be very important to me, not only discussing topics that I consider important but also showcasing several of my web-related skills, including CSS, Javascript and server-side programming. Summer 1991 - December 1997 Sales assistant with Mr. Prem Sagar Bhaskar (Self employed) This involved work in market trading, I had to deal with the public on a regular basis in an environment more challenging than is usual in retail. Many customers have unrealistic expectations of the prices of goods available at the market. Reconciling these expectations with the realities of a small business was an often difficult task requiring well developed communications skills and patience. I was also routinely entrusted to keep money until the end of the day. EDUCATION and QUALIFICATIONS 1997 - 2001 BSc Computing Science (Hons), University of Glasgow: Upper second class. My degree course has given me experience in both the theoretical and practical aspect of all sides of computing science. My third year team project involved the development of a medium-scale software system for a real client. This enabled me to develop my teamwork skills considerably, as well as the skill of working to a deadline for a client. These skills were honed during my final year project which involved building a multimedia, database-driven website for the Scottish Allotment and Garden Society using PHP and MySQL. Over the course of my degree, I feel that some of the most important courses that I have been taught have related to software and requirements engineering, HCI and interface design, database design and building and network theory. In 3rd year, I took 9 modular exams and got straight Bs. In 2nd year, I took 12 modular exams (including mathematics), and got 9 As, 2 Bs and one C. In 1st year, in modular exams (including mathematics, physics and astronomy), I got straight As. 1990 - 1997 Strabane Grammar School, Strabane 3 'A' Levels - Mathematics (A), Computing Science (B), Physics (B) 11 GCSEs - 1 A*, 5 As, 3 Bs, 2 Cs TECHNICAL SKILLS * I am skilled in several programming languages and styles, most notably Java (including interface building with Java Swing), C and Ada 95.
